Varicose Veins: Causes & Prevention
Varicose veins are those swollen veins right under the skin. They can be dark purple or blue-ish and look twisted, ropey and bulging - but what exactly causes them - and is there anything that can be done to prevent them?
Varicose Vein Causes:
They form when valves in the veins that are supposed to direct blood flow towards your heart stop working correctly and, as a result, blood pools in the veins - causing them to enlarge.

Normally these one-way valves work against gravity to direct blood towards the heart. When they become weakened or damaged and don't close properly the blood may start to flow backward - this is known as Venous Insufficiency or Venous Reflux. When veins near the surface of your skin can't handle the excess blood and pressure they engorge and turn into varicose veins. Heredity, obesity, pregnancy, age trauma and standing or sitting for long periods of time all have the potential to cause damage to the one-way valves (and therefore cause varicose veins)
Prevention:
Unfortunately there are no medically proven ways to completely prevent varicose veins - which means there is no miracle cream or pill you can use that will make them disappear. However, vein specialists say relieving pressure on the veins, as well as promoting muscle strength, helps to keep the blood flowing in the right direction. Exercising, losing weight, elevating your legs when resting, and not crossing them when sitting all have potential benefits. Wearing loose clothing and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing are also thought to be helpful. High-heeled shoes are a no-no as they don't allow the calf muscles to fully contract.

A very common problem with aging is the development of varicose veins. These veins are knotted and bloated in appearance. There isn't any particular vein that becomes varicose, but the veins in the legs and feet are the most commonly affected by this condition. Due to the force of gravity, standing and walking upright causes more pressure in the veins of your lower body, than the rest of the...

Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome is a blood vessel disorder combining cutaneous capillary angioma, extreme growth of the soft tissue and bone, and varicose veins. The syndrome is characterized by a localized or diffuse capillary malformation (portwine stain) that overlies a venous malformation and/or lymphatic malformation with...
If you suffer from heavy legs, take a look at how you spend your typical day. People who spend the majority of their day either just sitting down, or just standing up tend to suffer from heavy legs and feet. Besides from painful legs and feet, long intervals of sitting or standing can also lead to unsightly spider and varicose veins. Prevention is always better than cure. If it is possible,...
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, painful superficial veins resulting from poorly functioning valves. Varicose veins are common. They mostly affect women. Varicose veins are also called varicosity and varicosis. In severe cases, varicose veins can lead to skin changes resulting in eczema, pigmentation, and ulceration or bleeding.
A vein is a blood vessel that carries blood low in...
The swollen, twisted, and discolored veins that are characteristic of varicose veins occur when blood pools in the legs and distorts the veins. Blood is returned to the heart via a network of veins through??out the body, and the veins in the legs have the difficult task of directing blood to flow uphill. A series of valves in the veins keeps the blood from flowing backwards, but the valves can be...
